Highland Housing Fair

We are delighted to have been selected as a winner of the Highland Housing Fair Architectural Competition, our project was selected from over eighty entries, images of our entry can be seen here. The Housing fair will be open to the public in 2009, more details can be found here. Our entry has been lodged in conjunction with local builder James McQueen who will be responsible for the construction of the house.

Completions

Kildonan and Edinbane projects have now been completed.

Vatten complete

We are pleased to be able to update the vatten project with images of the completed house.

Projects

February should be an exciting month with a number of completions occuring (Vatten, Kildonan and Edinbane) look for an update at the end of the month with some new photos. Other project related news includes the starting on site within the next couple of months at Loch Maree, Husabost and Plockton, and new projects starting up in Kishorn, Argyll and Portnalong (watch this space).

Staff Required

We are presently advertising for an experienced architectural technician, the successful candidate will be experienced in timber frame construction, building regulations and capable of taking project responsibility for small to medium sized projects. If you feel that you are up to the challenge please get in touch.

Coast Magazine

The wooden house is profiled in this months coast magazine, we will post the article in the next update.

Web site

At the same time as time next project update we look forward to adding a new feature to the website (Sketchbook) this will give you a look behind the scenes at some of our processes and drawings produced at the early stages of design.

Newest Employee

We are pleased to welcome our newest employee Ian Grant to the practice. Ian joins us from the prestigious London Architectural practice Allies and Morrison.

Dornoch Amphitheatre

We are pleased to be able to unveil our designs for the Dornoch Forest Amphitheatre Project. These were recently presented to the steering group, and we will hear in the next few weeks whether our project has been selected.

Loch Maree Planning permission

We are delighted to announce that our Loch Maree project has been granted planning permission.

It is commonly perceived that only ‘traditional’ designs will be acceptable in a rural setting and we are pleased to be able to demonstrate that good quality contemporary design is now being increasingly accepted in the Highlands and Islands.

New Staff

We have had an enthusiastic response to our advert seeking new members of staff and are pleased to announce that we have now appointed three new employees. Elena Kindelan, a Spanish architect, has already joined us and we look forward to welcoming Nick Richardson and Sam Wright to the practice in July.

Rural Design is now one of the largest architectural practices in the Highlands. We began three years ago as just one architect and now have a total of 10 staff.

Sustainable Design

Rural Design were recently selected to feature in “At Home” in Scotland on Sunday Magazine as one of 5 practices specialising in sustainable rural architecture. Our commitment to sustainable design has been recognised by Communities Scotland who have now given final approval for our sustainable social housing project in Edinbane. The project includes many innovative features and we look forward to starting on site before the end of June.

Other projects to start on site this month include projects at Vatten, Ardmore and Kildonan.

Highland 2007 Competition

Rural Design were recently shortlisted, as one of three Scottish practices, to submit an entry for an unusual design competition forming part of the Highland 2007 celebrations. We look forward to the outcome of the judging process and will put our design online at the beginning of July.

New Rural Design Website

At long last our one page website has been replaced with a complete website, we are pleased to be able to tell you a little more about rural design and reveal some of the projects we have been working on. We will further update the content over the coming weeks, and plan to keep news up-to-date as regularly as possible. Many thanks to Kevin McKenzie at fileanta for producing an excellent website, and also for his patience with us over the past few months.

Employment with Rural Design

As a result of a growing workload we are seeking two additional members of staff to join us in Dunvegan. We have vacancies for a qualified Architect with between 2 and 5 years experience, and a qualified (BIAT) Architectural Technologist. Please apply in writing to our Dunvegan office, enclosing some examples of your work. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Loch Maree Lodged for Planning

Our Planning Application for the project at Loch Maree was submitted this week. We are very pleased with the project and think that the project is an excellent example of contemporary sustainable design.
