		<description>We have many interesting projects currently in the process of design and construction. Keep an eye on this section of the website for the latest news on these.

Rhue

Our project for a four bedroomed house in Rhue near Ullapool in Sutherland is currently on site. The project is "upside-down" with the living room and sheltered open terrace located on the upper level. The house has a split level floor plan that accommodates the awkward sloping site with minimum excavation. Clad in zinc, the house has a very low profile from the public road, and recalls the numerous agricultural barns nearby.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/rhue.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="398" width_o="881" height_o="524" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/rhue_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/rhue_11.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="435" width_o="709" height_o="461" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/rhue_11_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Kendram

This two bedroom house has a lozenge shaped plan, and is constructed in timber with a turf roof - it is intended to merge into the landscape and enjoy extraordinary views to the north of Skye. About to start on site.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/kendram_1.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="389" width_o="1236" height_o="719" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/kendram_1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Jura

A major reworking and extension of a property on the Isle of Jura. Currently submitted for Planning.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_5112.PNG" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="960" height_o="640" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_5112_o.PNG" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_5066.PNG" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="960" height_o="640" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_5066_o.PNG" align="left" /&#62;

12 Colbost

This large family house recalls our design for Scotland's Housing Expo. By breaking down the mass of the building into various elements, we have achieved a substantial one and three quarter storey dwelling that looks out over Colbost jetty and Loch Dunvegan. Currently on site.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_4031.JPG" border="0" width="670" height="589" width_o="726" height_o="639" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_4031_o.JPG" align="left" /&#62;

Camustianavaig

The two houses at Camustianavaig are sited on a former camping site near Portree on the Isle of Skye. The site has previously been terraced into flat platforms and the new houses work with this "new" topography, bedding themselves into the steps with upper and lower levels. The site is bounded on three sides by mature trees with views to Raasay to the south west.
The dwelling is a simple volume sitting on a random rubble plinth; the scale appear relatively minimal to the public road but opens up to the view to the private side of the house. The upper, third-floor, level is cantilevered over the lower level to maximize the benefit of sunlight &#38; views, and opens onto a south facing roof terrace.
The proposal has been designed for a local developer, and is currently being marketed. Please contact us if you require any further details.

Tin House

This small, one bedroom house will be entirely clad in galvanised sinusoidal cladding, and recalls the tradition of corrugated iron buildings common throughout the West Highlands. Currently submitted for Planning.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_5110.PNG" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="960" height_o="640" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_5110_o.PNG" align="left" /&#62;

Fiscavaig

Sitting next to "The Hen House" this new project recalls the tradition of agricultural barns and sheds, and reworks this into a contemporary dwelling enjoying the view over Loch Bracadale and towards Macleod's Tables. Currently on site.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_4918.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="339" width_o="1280" height_o="648" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_4918_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_4920.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="365" width_o="1214" height_o="662" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2550712/IMG_4920_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Upper Halistra

A single storey house has been broken up into discrete parts, including a "lean-to" element with extensive glazing addressing the view to Dunvegan Head. Currently on site.

Claddach Baleshare, North Uist

The sloping landscape is integrated into the design with an asymmetric plan, one half 1 3/4 storeys and the other half 1 1/2 storeys. All the occupied rooms face the south west view out towards the Atlantic.

Tokavaig

A house and annex are planned for a difficult site in Sleat. Challenging topography, together with a desire to maximise views and retain existing trees, were resolved by the semi courtyard arrangement. A sunspace faces south, and will channel heat to the upper level living space which look out over the bay and over to the Cuillin. Currently on site.

Bernisdale, Isle of Skye

This family house on Skye sits on the edge of an existing rock outcrop. Our starting point was to avoid the common approach of platforming the site and the consequent destruction of any pre-existing features. Instead we took advantage of the topography by stepping over the rock outcrop to create a multi-level house. The internal arrangement is carefully considered to take advantage of the views and sunlight.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/06_vatten1.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/06_vatten1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Vatten, Isle of Skye

This design occupies an exceptional site in north west Skye, combining outstanding views with orientation towards the south west. The house has been designed to take full advantage of all the characteristics of the site. The main house is juxtaposed with an organic form which encloses the main living spaces of the house: this part of the house is of timber construction with a sedum roof, which is designed to grow out of the ground.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/08_dunhallin.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/08_dunhallin_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Dunhallin, Isle of Skye

Built upon an existing foundation from a prefabricated concrete house, this design uses the language of agricultural barns and sheds to add complexity and richness to a crowded site. Scottish larch cladding and corrugated sheeting enclose an open plan volume of interlocking internal spaces.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/15_aird-1.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/15_aird-1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Aird, Isle of Skye

This house on Skye has been designed for ease of living for its retired occupant. The single storey two bedroomed house takes advantage of the views from the site with a simple linear plan.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/balgown-1.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/balgown-1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Balgown

This project takes full advantage of its sloping site to create three levels stepping down the hill. The central dining space which enjoys a double height volume connects the two halves of the house, one part of which is to be used for luxury bed and breakfast accomodation. An artists studio in an upper gallery overlooks the dining space below The master bedroom and main living room each have exceptional views towards Loch Bracadale. The house is of timber frame construction, and clad with rendered masonry, the roof is natural slate. The attached Garage is of untreated larch giving contrast to the main house.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/achintraid2.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/achintraid2_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

4 Houses at Achintraid, Kishorn for Albyn Housing Society

While the house type here was constrained by a very narrow site, the design developed to allow all apartments to have views across Loch Kishorn to the Bealach na Ba. The houses are designed to accord with the underlying character of local housing. Superinsulation and thermal stores minimise heating requirements for the occupants of the houses.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/IMG_3181.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="2048" height_o="1535" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/IMG_3181_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;
Achachork, Portree

This house sits adjacent to a larger house and has been designed to reflect the character of stone byres often found on skye and the surrounding area. This one bedroomed property is let as a five star holiday cottage, and has been designed to retain privacy for the occupants while enjoying fabulous views of the Cuillin and surrounding landscape.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/11-Ardmore.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/11-Ardmore_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Ardmore

An unloved crofthouse, which has been insensitively extended on many occasions over the years has been restored and renewed. Through a combination of the removal of some extensions, and the addition of sensitively considered new extensions. The outstanding views present on the site are finally visible from the house.

&#60;img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/Untitled 3.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="427" width_o="750" height_o="478" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/5/183978/2547993/Untitled 3_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Ullinish Lodge Hotel

The Ullinish Lodge Hotel had been neglected for many years, our successful restoration project removed many of the unfortunate additions, and returned the building to its former, robust form.
Completed in less than 11 months from commissioning, the project is an example of the benefits of early appointment of a contractor and productive teamwork.</description>

This former Fisherman's Mission in Lochinver was saved for community use by the the Assynt Community Association.
Rural Design assisted the Association through the various funding applications and were delighted when the group was successful.

The new activities inserted into the existing building comprise a Community Cafe, Archive and Bunkhouse. Extensive internal remodelling was required, together with re-organising the entrance and providing an appropriate public face to the new Mission.

A wood-pellet based heating system has also been installed together with an extensive array of solar panels, ensuring running costs are kept to a minimum.

This project was to provide amenity housing within the Ross-shire village of Plockton. The site, located at the immediate entrance to the village and set within a conservation area, presented significant challenges. The project echoes the paired houses and barns found in the West Highlands. 3d modelling assisted our design proposals at an early stage in developing a suitable massing, protecting the sight-lines and amenity of adjoining properties. The building is finished in rubble stonework, wet dash harl, slate and timber.

A small terrace of 4 houses for Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association. Sustainability was a key criteria in the preparation of the design: in parallel with using orientation and siting to full advantage the development utilises a deep wall construction and an innovative solar powered heat exchanger.

Leachachan Barn near Letterfearn on the south side of Loch Duich has been sensitively transformed into a new house. A dramatic new opening in the gable has opened up the views to the Five Sisters of Kintail, while allowing the rest of the house to remain true to its origins. A simple lean-to extension to the rear increases the floor area in a traditional manner. The larch cladding contrasts with the original stonework, and will fade to a beautiful silver grey.

Leachachan Barn is available for Holiday Rental

Our first project in the Western Isles, a six-bedroomed holiday house, sits on a gentle slope looking west over the beautiful beaches at Clachan Sands. This large building has been broken down into discrete elements following traditional forms. A traditional slated and harled element contains all the bedroom spaces, while the open plan living, dining and kitchen space is enclosed within a contrasting timber-clad lean-to.
Large panoramic windows allow the occupants to enjoy the wonderful view.

This house is available for holiday lets and can be seen in further detail here - Clachan Lodge

Our second project in Lochbay has been designed to take advantage of the fantastic views over the Waternish peninsula. Designed to Passive House standards, this two-bedroomed house incorporates exceptionally high levels of insulation and airtightness. All heating requirements are provided by the wood burning stove. Solar hot water and an efficient system of whole-house ventilation with heat recovery are also incorporated in the design.
